Day 22 of our Europe Trip

Thursday 31st March

We started the day bright and early and headed for Parque Nacional Peneda-Gerês. We drove through the small winding country roads and up into the hills and the views have to be some of the most stunning I’ve ever seen. From the small villages of Soaja and Lindoso to mountains and reservoirs, the scenery was simply perfect. We also stumbled on a couple of castles to explore, one in Lindoso; it is believed that the fortress was started in the 13th century reign of Afonso III of Portugal. The other A Escusalla, it is an old senorial house built by the Abbot of Manin. Unlike historical buildings which are preserved immaculately, the Escusalla has been allowed to age with time, with nature replacing the long departed hosts - it felt magical, like we stepped into a fairytale.

Tonight, we experienced the difficulty of finding a spot to camp in Portugal but we found a great Aire by the beach to watch the sunset!
