Day 13 of our Europe Trip
Tuesday 22nd March
Our plan, was to drive straight to Santillana del Mar, but as with road trips, things don’t always go to plan. I think it’s probably my favourite part of road trips, the spontaneity and not know where the day might take you. Today was one of the those days..
As we we’re turning out of the campsite and heading off to our destination via the main road, I looked up to find the most beautiful stretch of coastline…it had to be in my top 3! The water was so blue, and the cliffs so impressive. People were out walking, running and dogs were playing (and falling) in and out of the rock pools. Caves and inlets had been formed, as the tide had gone out and we explored these, whilst strolling barefoot in the sand. There was a great carpark as well (also for free!) just next to the beach of Playa Virgen Del Mar, with a great little place to eat called the Taverna Bambara; we had a great tapas selection, although a tip - the portions are pretty generous and we ordered way to much. Fortunately we had some Tupperware for takeaway!
After spending the morning (and a lot of the afternoon) we drove to Santiallana del Mar, around a 30 minute drive from where we were. It’s a beautiful town in Cantabria region and is well known for its medieval towers, Renaissance palaces and the Romanesque Santa Juliana Collegiate Church. We got to try their Sobaos Pasiegos and quesadas with fresh cows milk from Cash Quevedo. These sweet treats are made of milk, eggs sugar. We tried one with butter and one without. They also having a lovely little seating area just around the back, although the towns cats do want you to share your food with them!
