Day 14 of our Europe Trip

Wednesday 23rd March

Today, we woke up in Pico De Europa. The night before, we drove around an 1 hour 15 minutes to our next stop. Picos de Europa are a mountain range extending for about 20 km, forming part of the Cantabrian Mountains in northern Spain. Pico De Europa is situated between Asturias, Cantabria and Leon, with the tallest peak being the Torre De Cerredo, at 2650 metres.

We stayed in a viewing point car park called Recreation Area the Fitu. The views from up here were unlike anything I’ve ever seen, with the coastline glistening on one side and the mountain range of the Pico de Europa on the other side. On one side the sun shone down, with the other looking almost moody, with the snow capped peaks towering from above. A tip for the staying the night here, whilst beautiful, a cold breeze and strong wind can blow across from the mountains and with it being such am exposed spot winds can reach 50mph, which is not so comfy for a good nights rest. We headed just down the road (literally about a minute) to a slightly lower ground spot and the wind was gone completely, this made for a much more relaxing experience.

We then drove on to walk around the Covadonga lakes. These are two glacial lakes known as Lake Enol and Lake Ericina at an elevation of 1,134 metres. The walk we did was around 5km around both lakes. Its a great place to got for a hike with both longer and shorter walk options available. Both lakes can be viewed from the viewing area just a little way up hill from the car park, however you can then take a circular walk around both lakes to get a closer look! We always take a map, just in case but there are helpful symbols marked into the rocks to help prompt the route. I’ll add some photos below, as I really think the view speaks for itself, an absolute must if you’re ever in this region of Spain!
